Relationships, Sex & Health Education (RSE) and PSHE
At St Edmund’s, we believe every child is uniquely created and loved by God.
Our Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSE) and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) curriculum helps children grow into confident, respectful, safe and responsible members of society.
Our approach reflects:
-
The teachings of the Catholic Church
-
Government statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education
-
Catholic Social Teaching and our SPIRIT values
-
Our mission: “Through Christ, We Learn”
What We Teach
RSE (Relationships & Sex Education)
RSE at St Edmund’s is taught through the TenTen Life to the Full programme, a Catholic resource approved by the Diocese and fully compliant with the DfE statutory RHE guidance.
Children learn about:
-
healthy friendships and relationships
-
family life and caring for others
-
emotional wellbeing and mental health
-
personal boundaries and keeping safe
-
understanding their bodies and changes as they grow
-
online behaviour and digital safety
In Years 5 and 6, pupils also learn age-appropriate content about human development.
Parents can request withdrawal from sex education elements, but not from statutory Relationships or Health Education.
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education)
PSHE is taught across the curriculum through:
-
circle time
-
assemblies and themed weeks (Anti-Bullying, Online Safety, Mental Health)
-
RE and Catholic Social Teaching
-
Inclusion, safeguarding and wellbeing activities
-
classroom lessons linked to personal development
Children learn about:
-
kindness, respect and inclusion
-
responsibilities and community
-
decision-making and resilience
-
healthy lifestyles and mental wellbeing
-
safety in school, at home and online
-
living out British Values in a Catholic context
Together, RSE and PSHE help children understand themselves, value others and grow in confidence and character.
