At St Edmund’s, our mission statement is not something we only display on a wall — it is something we truly believe in and try to live every single day.
“Through Christ We Learn”
captures who we are as a community and what we hope for every child who walks through our doors.
From the moment you step into our school, you can sense the warmth, welcome and care that flow from this mission. You see it in the way pupils greet each other, in the peaceful prayer tables in each classroom, and in the gentle, encouraging relationships between staff and children.
Our mission echoes Jesus’ words:
“Let the little children come to me.” (Matthew 19:14)
Here, every child is welcomed, cherished and known by name.
It is also rooted in Christ’s invitation:
“Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart.” (Matthew 11:29)
These words shape the way we teach, the way we support one another, and the way we help our children grow in confidence, empathy and resilience.
And most of all, our mission is lived.
It comes to life when a child stops to comfort someone who is upset.
It shows itself when our Peace & Justice Leaders share the Sunday Gospel and offer a meaningful “mission” for the week ahead.
It appears in the smiles of pupils helping younger children during worship.
It shines when our community gathers at Mass to pray together:
“The Lord is my light and my salvation.” (Psalm 27:1)
Guided by the example of our school saint, St Edmund of Abingdon, we teach our pupils that learning is not only about subjects and skills. It is also about growing into the kind, thoughtful and courageous person God created them to be.
We remind them of Jesus’ promise:
“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)
And you can see the mission being lived across our school every day:
-
In the quiet moments of prayer and reflection
-
In Celebration of the Word every Monday
-
In the Prayer Garden where children write prayers, give thanks, or reflect in silence
-
In the service projects led by our Caritas Ambassadors and Eco Team
-
In the thoughtful acts of kindness, fairness and forgiveness that happen naturally between children
-
In the SPIRIT values — Service, Perseverance, Integrity, Respect, Inclusivity, Trust — which guide our choices and relationships
Whether in a lesson, a playground conversation, a whole-school assembly or a simple act of kindness, our children learn that Christ is with them — supporting them, encouraging them, and helping them grow.
This is what our mission means to us:
We learn with Christ.
We learn through Christ.
We learn to be more like Christ.
At St Edmund’s, “Through Christ We Learn” is not just our motto.
It is our way of being a school.
It is the story we tell.
And it is the life we share.
