Our School Prayer Garden
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
At St Edmund’s, our Prayer Garden is a cherished sacred space at the heart of our school community — a place where faith, reflection, and creativity come alive. Surrounded by nature and watched over by Our Lady, the garden offers children a peaceful environment to pray, reflect, and encounter God in the beauty of creation.
A Living Space for Faith
Our Prayer Garden is not just a quiet corner — it’s a living, growing space of prayer and worship. Children regularly visit with their teachers for RE outdoor learning, where Scripture is explored under the open sky, and where adoration and reflection become deeply tangible experiences. This natural setting allows pupils to connect with their faith in a personal and joyful way.
Child-Led Worship and Reflection
Classes use the Prayer Garden to hold their child-led Celebrations of the Word, bringing together Scripture, prayer, music and reflection in a setting that invites reverence and participation. Here, children take ownership of their spiritual life — they read, lead prayers, set up worship spaces, and create moments of beauty for their classmates.
Creativity and Prayer Combined
Throughout the year, pupils design and place prayer pebbles, hand-made crosses, and creative symbols of faith in the garden. Each item carries their personal intentions, hopes, or thanksgiving, making the space feel truly crafted by the children for the children. Prayer corners evolve naturally as pupils contribute their ideas, turning the garden into a vibrant, ever-changing expression of our collective faith.
A Place to Pause and Pray
During break and lunchtimes, children are welcomed to visit the Prayer Garden independently. Many choose to spend time there in spontaneous prayer, thanksgiving, or forgiveness, or to simply sit quietly and reflect. Others help care for the space by tidying, arranging pebbles, or watering the plants — a beautiful act of stewardship and shared responsibility.
Rooted in Faith, Growing in Love
Our Prayer Garden plays a vital role in nurturing pupils’ spiritual, moral and emotional development. It reflects our Catholic identity and helps children develop rhythms of prayer, stillness, community and care that last far beyond the school gates. Whether through a class liturgy, a whispered prayer, or a creative act of worship, this special space reminds our children daily that God is with them, in every moment.
