Religious Education Assessment at St Edmund’s
At St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School, Religious Education is a core subject and lies at the heart of our Catholic life and mission.
Our assessment approach ensures that every child makes progress in their theological understanding, their ability to think critically and discern, and their capacity to respond personally in faith.
We follow the Diocese of Westminster’s RED model curriculum and use the national Religious Education Directory (2023) learning outcomes. Children are assessed through the three key “Ways of Knowing”:
-
Understand — knowledge of Scripture, doctrine, and key beliefs.
-
Discern — interpretation, reflection, and moral reasoning.
-
Respond — personal faith response (celebrated but not graded).
Teachers use ongoing formative assessment, indicative tasks, pupil voice, and half-termly summative assessments to track progress using Insight. Work is regularly moderated to ensure consistency and high standards. Each year group has clear age-related expectations, allowing us to recognise and support every child’s spiritual and academic development.
This policy shows our commitment to delivering high-quality Religious Education that nurtures faith, deepens understanding, and meets the expectations of the Catholic Schools Inspectorate framework.

Racial Justice, Equality & Diversity (RJED)
At St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School, Racial Justice, Equality and Diversity (RJED) are not treated as stand-alone initiatives but as part of one living formation journey rooted in Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and the Gospel values of dignity, inclusion and love.
Through our Master Alignment Matrix, we deliberately integrate:
-
Ten Ten RSE themes, RJED priorities, and Interfaith dialogue,
-
CST principles (Care of Creation, Preferential Option for the Poor, Solidarity and Peace, Community and Participation, Dignity of Workers, Dignity),
-
Assemblies, saints, feast days, and charitable action,
-
Curriculum learning, pupil leadership, and community engagement.
This whole-school alignment ensures that pupils see, pray, learn and act consistently across the year. RJED principles are reinforced in curriculum content (e.g. Black History, Show Racism the Red Card), interfaith visits, liturgies, and charitable missions.
Pupil leadership is central: Peace & Justice Leaders, Eco Teams, Prayer Leaders and Ambassadors drive CST action, lead assemblies, and model inclusion. We celebrate diversity as a gift and actively form pupils as agents of transformation who recognise their God-given dignity and that of others.
RJED implementation is monitored through:
-
Leadership learning walks, pupil voice, book looks
-
Governor monitoring and Catholic Self-Evaluation (CSED)
-
Annual review of the Master Alignment Matrix
Policy Snapshot – Relationships, Sex & Health Education (RSE)
At St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School, Relationships, Sex & Health Education (RSE) is rooted in our mission “…through Christ we learn…” and grounded in Catholic Social Teaching (CST). RSE is not delivered in isolation but as part of a whole-school formation journey that shapes pupils spiritually, morally, socially and culturally.
We use the Ten Ten Life to the Full programme (EYFS–Y6), fully aligned with:
-
Gospel values and CST principles (Human Dignity, Solidarity, Stewardship, Common Good)
-
RJED initiatives (e.g. Black History focus, Show Racism the Red Card, Anti-Bullying Week)
-
Interfaith dialogue through visits, assemblies and curriculum links
-
Liturgical life, saints, feast days and charitable action across the year.
This alignment is mapped in the Master Alignment Matrix, ensuring pupils see – pray – learn – act consistently across curriculum, worship and community life. RSE teaching is:
-
Theologically grounded and faithful to Church teaching
-
Age-appropriate, inclusive and sensitive to pupils’ backgrounds
-
Delivered through curriculum, prayer, assemblies, liturgies and thematic weeks.
CST is woven throughout RSE: pupils encounter themes like Care for Creation, Dignity, Community and Participation through curriculum content, charitable projects (CAFOD, Caritas), feast days (e.g. St Francis, St Joseph), and interfaith experiences.
Monitoring and evaluation take place through lesson observations, planning scrutiny, pupil voice, Ten Ten audits and Catholic Self-Evaluation. Governors and leaders review impact annually, ensuring statutory compliance and high-quality theological formation.
This strategic approach strengthens Catholic identity, deepens pupils’ understanding of their God-given dignity, and prepares them to build healthy relationships and contribute positively to the world.
